In ancient Hindu culture, yoga started as a way to develop mind and train body to self-observe and to develop self-awareness. Yoga has many benefits, but in this article, we will focus on yoga poses for weight loss. Not only yoga helps you with your mental health, they can also help you lose weight when combined with healthy eating habits.

Yoga was originated from India during the Indus-Sarasvati Era about 5000 years ago. The word “Yoga” is mentioned in the sacred Hindu book Rig Veda as well. Yogi and gurus have been practicing yoga for a long time in Hindu religion.


Yoga can help you acquire discernment, bring self-awareness, and achieve higher consciousness by connecting your mind to your body. In modern days, yoga is also used for weight loss, strength building, endurance development, and mental health.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of yoga poses as described in the ancient Hindu religious books or Vedas, but there is so much one can do. The yoga poses are called Asanas in the native term which means positioning for Yoga.

Here are some yoga poses for weight loss:

Pose #1: Plank Pose (Kumbhakasana)

This is a push-up like position where you have to sit in a position for 30-60 seconds. For beginners, it might be very difficult to stay in plank position for more than 30 seconds.This pose is very good for weight loss because this targets your belly directly to create more core strength and get rid of your excessive belly fat.

Pose #2: Bridge (Setu Bandhasana)

This pose targets the back and lower parts of your body and belly. For this, you will have to lay on your back and draw your lower body in and up in motion. For optimal impact, you can also hold/stay on the pose when you are at up position for few seconds.

Pose #3: Boat (Navasana)

For this position, you will have to sit on the floor or yoga mat with your knees bent and lift your feet up like shown in the figure above. This yoga pose helps strengthening your legs, thighs, belly, and spine. Since this pose strengthens most of your core muscles, this can also help you detox your body quickly.


Pose #4: Goddess (Utkata Konasana)

For this pose, you will need to stand and do namaskaram while turning your toes out and bending knees so that your feet is about 45 degree angle. This is one of the most effective yoga poses for weight loss. You can stay in this pose for about 30 seconds to 60 seconds before going back to the original standing position. This yoga pose will strengthen your quadriceps, inner thigh, groin, and chest.

Pose #5: Upward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Shvanasana)

For this pose, you will have to drop your hips forward towards the floor, pull your chest forward, and look towards the ceiling while keeping your palms on the floor. This is very good for your back, hips, arms, and shoulders. Be careful while doing this yoga pose because you could hurt your back if you press your hips on the floor hard.
